toddkelley's Statement

The Cliffnotes: I am a writer, producer, designer, ghetto-turned enlightened negro, married, techno-geek. I’m a laid back, comedic (but not funny), intelligent (but not smart) musician (but not musical) who (in the right light) can be non-hideous by today’s ostentatious standards.

Other Thoughts: I’m a person with a lot to say and do, but too shy to really put it all out there. I grew up pathologically shy, so just communicating on an everyday basis can be a bit of a task.

Writing: I love writing. Not in the sense that i’d like it to be a job. But I love trying to translate my thoughts and feelings to paper. More times than not, it comes out totally different and I learn more through the process.

Music: I listen to music all the time. I created music from samples. It’s what I am. Music is my first love and rules my every thought, hope and dream. I can’t understand how people don’t live with a soundtrack constantly playing in their head. To me it sounds frightening, like losing your site or hearing. You can take anything away from me and I will recover. Take music from my life and you’ve destroyed me.

  • Music: Chance Of Rain (Vocals by T.J. Brown)

This is an incredible track i did a few years ago, working with soulstress, T.J. Brown. This was an older song i had done years ago, that T.J. said she loved and wanted to use. So I re-mastered the track and rebuilt it around an accapella she sent me and the result was golden.

  • Music: Da Hell (Vocals by Dantrel "Fave" Robinson)

This is perfect example of how a person can write lyrics and turn a throw away song into something special. This version is kinda short, but we're working on a full length track to be released next year.

  • Music: Stand (Vocals by Doyle Robinson)

I've been working on a collaborative project called The RhythmTeachers with Doyle Robinson. It's a spiritual / urban music project that's spawn a good number of songs between us. This is one of my favorite.

  • Music: Blue Kinda Grey (Rainy Day Mix)

This is the title track off of my 2006 CD. Recently, my collborative partner, Dantrel "Fave" Robinson took my mininalistic song and added some instrument goodness to it. I love the new sound. And it's spawned us doing more collaborations in Logic Pro.

  • Music: Emoticon

This is a new beat i'm working on. I don't care for it that much, but most people who hear it love it more than i do. To me it sounds like something is missing, but it's growing on me.

  • Music: Goodbye

I originally made this track when I was moving in with my 'then' girlfriend. I was currently living in San Jose and moving 40 miles north to San Francisco, California. The early morning before I made the transition, I walked through downtown San Jose before the sun came u...

  • Rant: Oppression, You, Me And Her Friend The Lesbian

In this incredible day and age, ask yourself this: Where do the most intense philosophical debates originate? — Classrooms? — Lectures? — Parole Board Hearings? Nope! The most intense philosophical debates occur in back-alley pubs, with at least two p...

  • Short Story: The Eulogy

He could feel the Minister staring at him. So, he fought to keep his head down; his eyes buried on the Bible resting in his lap. He had to squeeze every second he could into that moment. Because he knew, the second he looked up, it would be his turn. And he would have to...

  • Short Story: The Darkness

The pain is still there. Has it always been there? I can't remember a time without it. Like roaches, gnawing away at my stomach... or are they in my stomach? This is where I exist. I want to shed what I am. I want to run away naked, stripped of all existen...

  • Short Story: Gun

PART I: ALL I WANT TO DO IS PULL THE TRIGGER I stared at it for what seemed to be hours. I studied it; observed its black contours, contrasted against my light wood dresser. It was so small. How could something so small do what I wanted i...

  • Poem: Dreaming With A Broken Heart

  • Poem: Nobody
