Unspoken Etymology

We all live by words, often not realizing the implications or the irony of the words we choose. I use the phrase Etymology as unspoken because my artwork does not have meaning just by words alone. My artwork is all thought of the unconscious and image state of mind. As I try to pen down an “artist's statement” I find myself frustrated at not being able to convey in words what would make sense to you, the reader and then I remember that this is why I create art.

My career is based in the graphic design industry. I love working with people, images and text, and the creation of graphics to produce a personal statement. As an artist my goals are somewhat different, I create themes, stories that tell not only about myself but touch on our cultural conditions as well--various addictions, institutional practices, and power struggles. I believe I have discovered a niche for myself in the contemporary art world by creating installation art and I hope to continue representing societal discourse through my artwork.

I have moved away from the viewer looking at my work on just a computer monitor and moved into installation art practices where more than one person can interact with the piece at the same time, but I still use the computer, as a tool, to enhance my environments.

I also enjoy photography, collage, and digital collage work. Photography gets me out into this world of ours; collage does the same thing, because I have to go out and gather unique/interesting objects. When I am creating digital collage I use appropriated images, scanned images of collected objects, and my own photography, and text.

I grapple and fumble with a multitude of words and as many an emotion that swirl within me; how do I convey to you what I struggle with myself. My specialty is graphic art, so I find myself wrestling with an identity which outflows my ideas to the computer screen. Covered in technology and colors, I work in the eye of computer programs and a mouse gaining an understanding of the visuals that convey and effective message represents personality, and a memorable identity. I stumble, type and drag and pull the motions of layers across the sized canvas ever searching for ideas that eventually relent and release images of faces, figures and forms that pull through to the surface. I combine my unique skills, experience, and sense of aesthetics to any design solution. I provide freedom and ease in creating an identity through vision.

As I look back at my fairly brief experience at creating art I have come to realize that all of my art has been based on identity, storytelling, in essence my "becoming"--an artist, a designer, a student of life. What I love most about creating art is getting charged-up about an idea/concept, translating experience into imagery, when the work comes together as a whole and portrays what I am trying to say, and especially if it makes a social impact on the viewer.
