The theme of my work has an emphasis on the everyday. I am a people watcher and I thrive on observation. When I watch, I wonder what that certain individual may be experiencing, or what narrative can be attached to that person. I aim to capture people in their environment, with special emphasis on the human figure. Some of the references are based on candid photographs. I want to capture a moment from the outside looking in. “Current Events” is based on broadcasting the present just as the news does (hence the newspaper collage), but highlighting events and individuals that normally would not be in the limelight. Each event is special and these compositions provoke thought and questions from the viewer, which lead to the various narrative interpretations. The work exists as diptychs and triptychs, emphasizing one intimate moment. Each piece either adds or deletes information making each piece of the composition take on a different mood.
In a quote by artist Isabel Bishop “It is the totality of art that eventually informs us, that allows us to see the majesty in the ordinary, to realize that the ordinary is always extraordinary, and nothing can be taken for granted,” (Lunde, 17). My work takes these mundane scenes of the everyday and makes them special by composing them into paintings. My work draws on the normally unnoticed, trivial and repetitive actions comprising the common ground of daily life, as well as finding impetus in the realms of the popular and the demotic. The rise of the everyday in contemporary art is usually understood in terms of a desire to bring these uneventful and overlooked aspects of lived experience into visibility.
